Erie County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo announced the legislature has approved funding to conduct safety inspections of various culverts and bridges across Erie County. The Department of Public Works is entering into an agreement with the design firm Popli Design Group to conduct these inspections and document their condition. The large culverts and small bridges are inspected on a 4-year cycle while the pedestrian bridges are inspected on a 2-year cycle.
“By conducting these inspections on a regular basis, Erie County can prioritize maintenance and repairs. It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of our residents. These inspections allow us to do that,” said Legislator Lindsay Lorigo.
Erie County has 486 large culvert/small bridges and 11 pedestrian bridges. These structures are not inspected as part of the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Bridge Inspection Program. Therefore, the Erie County Department of Public works established its own inspection program. These inspections make it easier to prioritize repairs and replacements.
