LEGISLATOR LORIGO INTRODUCES RESOLUTION OPPOSING SURCHARGE ON RIDE SHARING

Erie County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo introduced a resolution in opposition to a New York State Senate proposal that would add a surcharge on ride sharing services.  In recognizing the negative impact a ride sharing surcharge would have on drivers and the ride sharing industry, Legislator Lorigo introduced a resolution opposing the measure.

“Some Albany politicians seem to continue looking for ways to drive business out of New York State. This latest effort to add a surcharge would have a devastating impact on the ride sharing industry.  Many drivers turn to ride sharing as a way to help make ends meet.  All this would do would increase the cost for customers and harm those trying to make a living,” said Lorigo.

The proposal from the New York State Senate would add a one-dollar per ride surcharge on ride sharing services that originate outside of the metropolitan commuter district.

“In many low-income and disadvantaged communities, residents don’t own their own cars.  They rely on ride-sharing to get to and from work, school, or appointments. New York State is already one of the most expensive places in the U.S. for ride sharing and users are already paying a tax on their rides.  This surcharge most impacts those who can least afford it,” said Legislator Lorigo.

The resolution also notes that the proposed tax would undermine efforts to reduce congestion and air pollution by discouraging the shared transportation option, and serve as a disincentive for those who have consumed excess legal substances.
