Erie County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo today criticized rule changes on county-owned golf courses imposed by the Erie County Parks Department, which mandates a shift from 18 to 9 holes for league golfers.
“It’s disheartening to note that these changes were implemented without substantial data or meaningful engagement with our golfing community, which includes seniors, women’s leagues, and veterans’ leagues. The lack of consultation with those directly affected is simply unacceptable,” said Legislator Lorigo.
Legislator Lorigo, along with the three other Republican Erie County Legislators, introduced a resolution to overturn the Parks Department’s modifications.
“Unfortunately, I was not able to garner enough support from across the aisle to reverse these unsubstantiated changes to the rules. Despite the unfortunate setback in the Legislature, rest assured that I am unwavering in my commitment to advocate for the rights of our golfing leagues,” said Legislator Lorigo.
Many of the impacted leagues have been golfing at the publicly owned courses for fifty years or more. The changes were made without input or in consultation with the members of these leagues. Legislator Lorigo recently met with the Deputy Parks Commissioner to discuss the Parks Department’s reason behind the changes. The Department did not produce any data at that meeting to support the need for the changes.
