Legislator Lorigo January 2024 Bee column

Earlier this month, I took the oath of office to represent the 10th Legislative District in the Erie County Legislature. I cannot tell you what an honor it is to have been elected to serve our community in this role. As a lifelong resident of Erie County who was raised in a blue-collar family, I learned early on the importance of hard work, service, and fiscal responsibility. These principles guide my decisions and priorities as your legislator.

In just a few weeks in office, several issues have come to the forefront.

One of the initial issues I addressed pertains to changes planned by the Erie County Parks Department for public golf courses. Golf leagues, with decades of history on these courses, were faced with the prospect of playing only nine holes and mandatory golf cart rentals. I had the pleasure of speaking with league presidents and attending a meeting to hear their concerns. I am pleased to share that the Parks Department is reversing the cart requirement. However, work remains to ensure these dedicated golfers can continue enjoying the courses as they have for years.

Another significant concern is Erie.Net. While expanding internet access is commendable, the reality of this project raises questions. The project, touted by the county executive as a sweeping effort to expand internet access, only aims to establish the infrastructure for private companies to tap into the lines and provide access. Currently, no agreements are in place to do so. Six years have passed, millions have been spent, yet the project is still in its early stages. Pending permissions and leases, along with the slow launch and technological lag, compound my concerns. In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, the relevance of the technology funded by your tax dollars is questionable. I am committed to fighting for common-sense government to address such issues.

This week, our community faced a blizzard, echoing the challenges presented by the November 2022 storm. Many area farmers suffered losses not typically covered by insurance. In response, a storm damage fund program has been initiated on behalf of Erie County. Two farms in my district, Balczerak Farms in Elma and Bengert Farms in West Seneca, will receive funding to aid in the rebuilding of structures like a collapsed grain bin roof and a greenhouse under the weight of snow.

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our County and Town Highway crews and first responders who worked tirelessly during the snowstorms to clear the roads and keep our community safe.

Again, I want to express my gratitude for the trust you've placed in me. I look forward to being your voice in County Hall.
