Erie County Legislator John Gilmour Sponsors Resolutions Protecting Police and Peace Officers

Erie County, NY –Legislator John Gilmour cosponsored four separate resolutions affirming the Erie County Legislature’s support for local, county, and state police forces at the Legislature’s June 10th session. The Erie County Legislature resolutions support bills currently before the New York State Senate. All of them drew bipartisan support from the body.

The County resolutions support state legislation that would further protect police officers from those who knowingly file false reports against them and those who assault emergency personnel. They also support creating a separate criminal charge for “doxing” police and peace officers. The resolutions passed the Legislature with an 8-3 bipartisan vote.

“As our nation is emerging from the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic and experiencing a wave of violent crime, I think it’s important that police officers, first responders, and their families know that we support them. Most serve our citizens very well and deserve our respect; I have always been forthright about my support for our local police organizations, and I was pleased to join as a co-sponsor of these important resolutions,” stated Legislator Gilmour.

Copies of the resolutions Intro. 12-6, 12-7, 12-8, and 12-10 can be viewed on the Legislature website at www.erie.gov/legislature. They will be transmitted to the State Legislature and the Governor.
