Three Defendants Sentenced for Violent Attack on Victim in City's Broadway-Fillmore Neighborhood

Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announces thattwo brothers and their uncle were sentenced yesterday afternoon before Erie County Court Judge Susan Eagan for committing a violent attack that critically injured a victim in the city’s Broadway neighborhood.  

Amonti K. Atkins, 24, of Buffalo pleaded guilty one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, one count of Assault in the First Degree and one count of Gang Assault in the First Degree (Class “B” violent felonies). He pleaded guilty to all counts in the indictment in May 2024. Atkins was sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.

His brother, Amari K. Atkins, 28, of Buffalo pleaded guilty to one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, one count of Assault in the First Degree and one count of Gang Assault in the First Degree. He also pleaded guilty to all counts in the indictment on April 24, 2024. He also received a determinate sentence of 12 1/2 years in prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.

Their uncle, Demetrius F. Gore, 53, of Buffalo pleaded guilty to one count of Assault in the Second Degree (Class “D” felony) on May 22, 2024. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison followed by 1 ½ years of post-release supervision.

On Sunday, August 20, 2023, at approximately 10:15 a.m., Atkins, Atkins and Gore, assaulted the male victim on the 1500 block of Broadway near Deshler Street in the City of Buffalo. The assault occurred following a dispute outside of a nearby bottle redemption center. The brothers repeatedly punched and kicked the victim as he laid on the ground after being stabbed in the face by Amonti Atkins. Demetrius Gore, who was wearing sneakers, kicked the victim in the back and stomped on his face twice. Amonti Atkins and Amari Atkins continued to punch and kick the victim after he was rendered unconscious before leaving the scene. 

The victim, who was 41 years old at the time of the assault, was taken by ambulance to ECMC with serious physical injuries. He continues to recover from the injuries in a long-term care facility. As part of the sentencing proceeding, a final order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim.

“This was a brutally violent attack that occurred in broad daylight. I hope that the victim feels that justice has been served by all three defendants pleading guilty to felony charges and receiving state prison sentences for this vicious crime,” said Acting Erie County DA Mike Keane

Acting DA Keane commends Detective Carrie Sitarski, Detective Erin Heidenger and Officer Brian Nagy of the Buffalo Police Department for their work in this investigation.   

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Briana R. D. Kalman of the Narcotics/Intelligence Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Nicholas C. Bussi of the Felony Trials Bureau.
