District Attorney John Flynn Invited to Speak Before International Association of Prosecutors on Tops Tragedy

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn has been selected by the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) to speak at the organization’s 28th General Meeting in London, England. Next week, District Attorney Flynn will hold a presentation about his office’s response to the mass shooting at Tops Friendly Markets before an audience of prosecutors from around the world.

In his presentation, “Buffalo Strong: The Role of the Prosecutor After a Racially Motivated Mass Shooting,” District Attorney Flynn explains the investigation and prosecution of the gunman responsible for killing ten victims and injuring three others in a rampage attack at a grocery store on Jefferson Avenue in the City of Buffalo last May. In addition, the presentation outlines how the Erie County District Attorney’s Office, along with numerous partner organizations, provided support to the families of the deceased, surviving victims, witnesses and community impacted by the tragedy.

While serving as President of the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA), District Attorney Flynn offered the presentation to prosecutors and law enforcement agencies throughout the country, speaking at conferences in Arizona, Kentucky and Virginia. DA Flynn also offered guidance and support to the State Attorney for the Fourth Judicial Circuit after their community experienced a racially-motivated attack last month in Jacksonville, Florida.

“It is my great honor to be invited to meet with members of IAP from around the globe about this important issue and speak about my experiences after the City of Buffalo experienced a hate-motivated attack. Unfortunately, mass casualty incidents have become increasingly more frequent in the United States and worldwide. While we hope and pray that these tragedies never occur, it is important that prosecutors be the best prepared to support the victims, witnesses and community while bringing swift justice and upholding the rule of law, fairness, impartiality,” said Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn.

The International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), established in 1995, is a worldwide community of prosecutors committed to setting and raising standards of professional conduct and ethics, promoting the rule of law, and improving international cooperation to combat crime. IAP provides training, networking and the exchange of knowledge and expertise to its members, which consists of organizations and individuals who represent more than 177 different countries.

DA John J. Flynn is serving his second term as the 41st District Attorney of Erie County, New York. DA Flynn also serves as the President of the District Attorneys Association of New York (DAASNY), an organization representing prosecutors throughout New York and promotes communication, cooperation, training and consultation on matters concerning crime and improving the legal system. DA Flynn is the current Chair of the Board of the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA), an organization representing prosecutors throughout the United States. In July 2023, DA Flynn completed his one-year term as President of the organization after being unanimously elected by its members.
