Keith Burich |
I spent 40 years teaching and researching Native Americans history and culture at Canisius University. I published two books and several articles, and I have given numerous lectures on Native topics. However, my education began when I first stepped foot on a reservation, and I realized that I had to unlearn everything I knew about Indians. After spending 30 years visiting reservations across America, often with groups of students in tow, I finally came to understand that, despite the vast differences between the two cultures, the story of the American Indian is really the story of America and Americans. Native American history is American history.

Andrew Elizabeth Marts & Forkl |
In 2023 Elizabeth Forkl and Andrew Marts attended the Erie county Fair with a few co-workers, we set up a table, had a 911 simulator, and engaged with kids and adults from all over. It was an eye opener to learn that many people are not as knowledgeable about calling 911. This is our lifeline, our outlet for help, and being able to know what you’re doing when you need help is very important. So My co-worker and I sat there and brainstormed an idea to pitch to our supervisor, and maybe even higher. An idea to teach, inform and educate the public on how the 911 system works. We highlight the technology we use, information the caller may need, and are able to conduct a practice 911 call on our simulator. From this, “Reach Out To 911” was then created, and have since reached over 10,000 individuals.
