Democratic Majority Caucus votes against Lorigo, Greene, Todaro, and Mills proposal to eliminate the sales tax on natural gas and home heating fuel
Erie County, N.Y. -- Members of the Erie County Legislature’s Democratic Conference voted against Republican legislators’ proposal to eliminate sales tax on natural gas and home heating fuel Thursday afternoon.
The plan, submitted by Legislators Lorigo, Greene, Todaro, and Mills, would eliminate the 4.75% sales tax Erie County collects on natural gas and other home heating fuels. The resolution was submitted to provide tax relief as home heating costs are expected to rise significantly this year.
Minority Leader Lorigo said, “It’s upsetting that my colleagues across the aisle do not want to provide their constituents with relief as home heating bills are expected to climb. The weather is getting colder, and families are already struggling due to inflation and the cost of groceries going up. Erie County could have eliminated this sales tax without hurting the overall budget. In the meantime, I will continue fighting for lower taxes for all Erie County residents as we head into budget negotiations.”
Legislators Baskin, Johnson, Gilmour, Meyers, Chimera, and Bargnesi voted against the resolution. A copy of the resolution can be viewed here.
