Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro introduced a resolution at the Erie County Legislature’s final session of 2025 that supports a State Senate Bill mandating schools accept medical exemptions when signed off on by a medical provider. Legislator Todaro took this action after Depew High School Senior Kayci Rae was told she could no longer attend school because she did not receive a meningitis booster. Rae previously had a very negative reaction to the booster and was provided medical clearance by a doctor.
“It is unfair that a high school senior is missing this very important year. School districts are looking for guidance, and the state must provide that guidance by allowing for medical exemptions. Kayci Rae’s health would be put in jeopardy if she were to receive another meningitis booster. Doctors recognized that and provided the necessary exemption,” said Legislator Frank Todaro.
Legislator Todaro’s resolution passed in the Erie County Legislature, sending a strong message to both state leaders and school districts that consideration should be given to those whose health would be adversely impacted were they to receive certain immunizations.
I’m grateful to my colleagues for supporting this resolution. The actual bill has bipartisan support in Albany. I’m hopeful it will pass, allowing school districts to continue allowing students to attend school if they receive necessary exemptions from certain immunizations,” said Legislator Todaro.
