LEGISLATOR MALCZEWSKI UNVEILS NEW INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND AT EMERY PARK

Erie County Legislator Jim Malczewski (10th District) joined other Erie County officials Monday, April 10, as they unveiled the new inclusive playground at Emery Park in South Wales.  The installation of the inclusive playgrounds at Erie County’s heritage parks began as an initiative of the Minority Caucus in 2021.

“I’m grateful my colleagues in the Minority Caucus recognized there was truly a need for the inclusive playgrounds and advocated for public funds to get these playgrounds built.  No child should be left out because they have different abilities.  This allows for children, regardless of challenges, to be able to play together,” said Legislator Jim Malczewski.

As part of fiscal negotiations two years ago, the Erie County Legislature’s Republican Caucus advocated for the construction of inclusive playgrounds at the heritage parks, and to pay for the projects in cash.   The funding includes $425,000 for each of the playgrounds, constructed in Emery, Chestnut Ridge, Como Lake, Akron Falls and Ellicott Creek Parks. In those negotiations, another $1.2 million in improvements was secured for all Erie County Parks.

“It was the proper way to fund these playgrounds at the time.  There were historic budget surpluses, so taxpayers wouldn’t have to foot the bill in additional interest to get these built,” said Legislator Malcziewski.

The plan came together when legislators noticed the Chestnut Ridge Conservancy and other non-profits had begun fundraising to get an inclusive playground at Chestnut Ridge Park.  Members recognized the county had the funds to get these important projects completed and negotiated to secure the dollars to see these projects through to completion.

“No child should feel left out.  I’m glad the inclusive playground at Emery Park is now completed and I look forward to all the heritage parks having similar places where all children can enjoy playing with friends and family,” said Legislator Malcziewski.
