Legislator Lorigo sponsors unanimously-supported law to lower property taxes for Erie County veterans

During the most recent session of the Erie County Legislature, Legislator Joe Lorigo sponsored and voted to pass a local law that would increase the exemption amounts for property taxes of veterans in Erie County. The original law was passed in 1997 setting the exemption limits at $18,000, $12,000 and $60,000 respectively. This new law would increase the exemption limits by 67% across the board, giving significant relief to veterans’ property tax burdens.

Legislator Lorigo said, “Updating the property tax exemptions to decrease the tax burden on our veterans has been long overdue. Everyone is feeling the squeeze of inflation and economic recession and this law will give relief to those who sacrificed for our freedoms and communities. I’m very proud to have sponsored this legislation and I will continue fighting for ways to cut taxes for Erie County residents.”

This new law will take effect immediately upon filing with the Secretary of State and will increase the exemption limits to $30,000, $20,000 and $100,000. This law was also co-sponsored by Legislators Greene, Todaro and Mills and was passed unanimously. The law can be viewed here.
