Helpline provides services to first responders and families
Erie County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo approved a multi-year contract to implement a helpline designed to help Western New York’s first responders and their families. The peer-based support service will provide pre-crisis exposure training and be the link to direct access for those in need.
“Our first responders are on the front lines. As such, they often bear witness to troubling scenes. It is up to us to ensure they get all the proper mental health care needed after witnessing traumatic events. This helpline does that, and is designed to help their families,” said Legislator Lorigo.
The helpline provides a tailored and comprehensive peer-based support service for all first responders and their families. The peer intervention model is inclusive of pre-crisis exposure training. It provides direct access to services for those on the front lines and their families.
“This is an important step toward closing the gap and ensuring the needs of first responders and their families are addressed. The helpline provides not only access, but also support and training activities on mental health and wellness,” said Legislator Lorigo.
This measure allows the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to enter a multi-year contract with the Western New York Law Enforcement Helpline to provide the necessary support. It was approved at the November 21, 2024 legislative session.
