Need across Erie County continues to grow
Erie County Legislator Chris Greene helped deliver meals Friday, March 24 to the homebound as part of FeedMore WNY’s March for Meals program. The initiative brings together government officials and community members to deliver meals while also spreading awareness of the needs in the community.
“It’s such a great program. As our population continues to age, the need grows,” said Legislator Greene. “In addition to bringing the homebound meals, it’s an opportunity for a wellness check. So often family members move out of town and the recipients only human contact is with the volunteers delivering meals.”
More than 5,000 older adults in Erie County are provided meals through the home delivery meals program. That amounts to nearly 900,000 meals being delivered each year through the Meals On Wheels program of FeedMore WNY. As the aging population in Erie County continues to grow, so does the need. In addition, as a result of the pandemic, more seniors are concerned about leaving their homes, making the delivery of nutritious and healthy meals even more necessary.
Clients receive a ready-to-eat hot lunch and a cold dinner. The volunteers also provide companionship to the recipients.
“It’s so rewarding to meet our neighbors and bring them meals. Organizations like FeedMore can always use more volunteers, especially as the need grows. And you make some special friendships with those you deliver meals to,” said Legislator Greene.
