LEGISLATOR GREENE APPROVES HELPLINE FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

Helpline provides services to first responders and families

Erie County Legislator Chris Greene approved a multi-year contract to implement a helpline designed to help Western New York’s first responders and their families. The peer-based support service will provide pre-crisis exposure training and be the link to direct access for those in need.

“Our law enforcement and first responders are often subjected to tragedies.  We have a responsibility to help them, particularly when their experiences could impact their mental health.  This helpline is designed to not only assist them, but also their families,” said Legislator Greene.

The goal of the helpline is to fund an evidence-based model of direct access for first responders and their families to peer intervention services inclusive of pre-crisis exposure and disaster-related training.

“Providing this service goes a long way toward ensuring more positive outcomes for those dealing with the impact of what they witness.  It is incumbent upon us to take care of the emotional needs of first responders and their families,” said Legislator Greene.

The helpline provides direct access to services for all first responders and their families. This measure allows the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to enter a multi-year contract with the Western New York Law Enforcement Helpline to provide the necessary support. It was approved at the November 21, 2024 legislative session.
