Thanks volunteers for their lifesaving efforts
Erie County Legislator Christopher Greene (6th District) honored the heroic efforts of the many volunteers who stepped up to save people during the December blizzard at a recent session of the Erie County Legislature.
“I am so grateful to the many organizations and people who selflessly stepped up to save others,” said Legislator Greene. Among those he recognized at the January 19th legislative session; Northern Erie Sno-Seekers Snowmobile Club, John Kelkenberg Sr., Paul Englert, the Newstead Volunteer Fire Company, the Akron Fire Company, Pastor Ron Martin of Faith Fellowship Church and the Erie County Federation of Snowmobile Clubs.
The Snowmobile Clubs were recognized for using their own snowmobiles, Sno-Cat groomers and ATVs to help rescue people trapped in their vehicles, transport essential workers, and assist so many more stranded without power. “They were able to reach people when no one else could. They had the equipment and expertise necessary and quite literally saved lives,” said Legislator Greene.
The Newstead Volunteer Fire Company was honored for rescuing several motorists and housing more than 100 individuals in their firehall. The Akron Fire Company came to the aid of many residents who were in great danger during the storm. Additionally, Pastor Ron Martin housed 30 people at his church. “They gave people a place to feel safe and warm at a time when residents were stranded in their cars or in their homes without heat,” said Legislator Greene.
John Kelkenberg Senior was acknowledged for using his farm tractor with a snowblower attachment to keep Heise Road open and to clear out the Harris Hill area. Paul Englert rescued a stranded family with a pregnant mom and twin toddlers, and transported numerous other stranded motorists.
“The storm was devastating. More than 40 lives were lost. As tragic as that is, without the assistance of these brave people and groups, the toll would have been far worse. I cannot thank them enough for their selfless acts, their bravery, and their willingness to take care of their neighbors. Our community is forever grateful.”
They were all honored at the January 19, 2023 session with proclamations from Legislator Greene and the Erie County Legislature.
