Thirteen people/businesses harmed in check-stealing operation
Minority Leader and Erie County Legislator John Mills worked with local government officials to assist in making thirteen victims whole after their school tax payments were recently stolen.
“These 13 people or businesses paid their school taxes. But under current state law, because their payments were technically considered late, they were to be charged additionally for the late payment. This was no fault of theirs, and working with other officials, we were able to waive those additional fees,” said Minority Leader and Erie County Legislator John Mills. “They should not be punished for having done nothing wrong.”
Those impacted had paid their school taxes. Those checks were then stolen. Many of those victims reside in Erie County Legislative District 11, represented by Legislator John Mills. Authorities were able to confirm who the victims were and work with Legislator Mills’ office to ensure their late charges were canceled.
I’m glad we were able to take care of this and I’m hopeful those involved in this scheme will be found and brought to justice,” concluded Legislator Mills.
