Minority Leader and Erie County Legislator John Mills approved a multi-year contract to implement a helpline designed to help Western New York’s first responders and their families. The peer-based support service will provide pre-crisis exposure training and be the link to direct access for those in need.
“Those on the front lines see so much in the course of saving others. What they witness can often be traumatic and stay with them for long periods. This helpline will help connect our first responders and their families to the assistance they need, ensuring their mental health is addressed,” said Legislator Mills. “If their family members are also dealing with trauma as a result of their loved one’s work, they will also receive assistance.’
This measure allows the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to enter a multi-year contract with the Western New York Law Enforcement Helpline to provide the necessary support. It was approved at the November 21, 2024 legislative session.
“It’s important we work to protect the mental health of our first responders, and ensure their emotional health needs are met. This helpline will allow us to do just that,” concluded Legislator Mills.
