REPUBLICAN LEGISLATORS SPEAK OUT AGAINST ZOO ADMISSION HIKES

Members of the Erie County Legislature’s Republican Caucus have introduced a resolution opposing the increase in admission fees to the Buffalo Zoo.  Zoo officials recently unveiled a new so-called “Zoo for All” plan that actually raises the price of admission by 44.6% for most visitors, from $17.95 to $25.95 for regular in-season tickets. The resolution calls on Buffalo Zoo officials to consider more affordable options.

“The Zoo already receives significant taxpayer funds to aid in their operations.  This increase prices many families out of a visit to the Buffalo Zoo,” said Minority Leader, Legislator John Mills.

Erie County alone has provided $3.7 million in public dollars to the Buffalo Zoo in just the past two years, and more than $20 million over the past decade.  Other levels of government also provide funding to the Buffalo Zoo.

“While I appreciate the idea of making a trip to the zoo more affordable for those facing financial challenges, raising admission prices for most makes going to the zoo cost prohibitive for many and will likely result in decreased attendance,” said Erie County Legislator Chris Greene.

With the admission price increase it will now cost more to attend the Buffalo Zoo than the Erie Zoo ($12); Toronto Zoo ($19.75 USD); Pittsburgh Zoo ($18); and the Central Park Zoo ($19.95).

“There are world class zoos within driving distance that charge considerably less for admission. The Buffalo Zoo has been around for nearly 150 years. It’s a destination for many. As a Legislature we voted to increase their funding in 2024.  It was never our intent that they would then decide to increase admission prices for most people,” said Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro.

“The Buffalo Zoo’s steep admission fee increase is a disservice to the community.  With taxpayers already providing significant support, this move excludes many families.  I urge the Zoo’s leadership to reconsider this decision and prioritize true affordability for all who wish to visit the Zoo,” said Erie County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo.
