Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has announced the appointment of David J. Shenk to the position of Commissioner of Senior Services for Erie County. Shenk, whose term began yesterday, replaces Tim Hogues as Commissioner of the department.
Shenk brings a specific skill set to the position, having previously served as director of the Erie County Veteran Service Agency, a position that leads a department that informs local military veterans – many of whom are senior citizens – and their families of available federal, state and local benefits. In addition, Shenk’s military service, professional work experience in other government positions and his community involvement will help benefit the Senior Services Department.
“Mr. Shenk will be an asset to the Senior Services department in the Commissioner’s role in large part to having already been working closely with several of our community partners throughout the county,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “His public-sector experience and his noble service to our community as a member of the military will allow him to work with our outstanding Senior Services employees. I look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role.”
Commissioner Shenk added, “I want to thank County Executive Poloncarz for this appointment. Erie County’s senior citizen population is diverse and active. I have already had the privilege to work with many of these energetic seniors and continue to be amazed by their enthusiasm. I am eager to get to work serving this unique population by continuing to ensure they are aware of and have access to all Erie County has to offer.”
Mr. Shenk previously served as Erie County Comptroller in 2012. He has worked for the Erie County Veteran Service Agency since 2014 and has served as director since 2016. He was the Boston Town Clerk from 1992 to 2012 and has served in the United States Army Reserves since 1988 in several different capacities as a health care specialist. Currently the First Sergeant for the 7207th Medical Support Unit, his past deployments included time served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. His awards include: Bronze Star, Combat Action Badge, Meritorious Service Medal, ECC Distinguished Alumni, Business First 40 Under 40, and Erie County Town Clerk of the Year.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Houghton College and a Master’s Degree in Health Administration from Roberts Wesleyan College.
