The Erie County Office for People with Disabilities is partnering with numerous community agencies throughout the month of October to raise awareness about Disability Awareness Month through education, outreach, and community events around Erie County. Each weekday during October a partner agency will be present from 11am – 2pm at the Downtown Library in Buffalo with information on services and supports for individuals with disabilities. Organizations such as The Arc Erie County, WNY Independent Living, the Epilepsy Association, Deaf Access Services, Parent Network and many more will be represented. Parent Network is also conducting a four-week parenting series throughout the month. In addition, a Diversity Career Fair will be held at the Downtown Library on October 25^th, while many other conferences, workshops, and special presentations will be held in October as well.

“Disability Awareness Month is a great opportunity to raise public awareness of individuals living with disabilities in our community and talk about the wide variety of services and supports that are available to them,” said Executive Director of the Office for People with Disabilities Frank Cammarata III.  “It is a very full schedule with items of interest for many people and events are held at different times of the day so we encourage anyone wishing to learn more to access the full schedule and make plans to join us at any of these events.”

Other highlights of Disability Awareness Month include an Autism Services Artwork Sale and Auction on October 5, the NDEAM luncheon at Roswell Park Cancer Institute on Friday October 19, a symposium on brain health, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease on October 23, and the annual Housing & Special Needs Population Conference on October 30^th.
