Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined today by Supervisor of the Town of Grand Island Nathan McMurray, members of the Erie County Department of Public Works, members of the Town of Grand Island Highway department, and local residents to review road work started this week on Baseline Road in the Town and also announce a project slated to begin Monday, September 19 on Whitehaven Road.

“This has been a busy road construction season across Erie County and we are pleased to be here on Grand Island to review the Baseline Road project and also to discuss the upcoming work on Whitehaven Road,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “My administration remains committed to providing residents and motorists with the best roads possible and as long as good weather holds we will continue to work on that.”

Preparation for the Baseline Road work began this week. The project involves a mill and overlay of approximately .8 miles of road between Whitehaven and Alvin Road, a stretch of road that carries approximately 5,700 vehicles per day. The project is being completed by Erie County Highway Department personnel.

The upcoming Whitehaven Road project will involve the mill and overlay of 1.6 miles of road on Whitehaven between Stony Road and the NYS Thruway overpass. Approximately 5,300 vehicles per day use this stretch of road, which is predominantly three lanes with shoulders; however, the section between Grand Island Boulevard and Baseline Road is five lanes. Occhino Corp. is the contractor for this project.

"This is one of the biggest paving projects in recent memory,” said Town of Grand Island Supervisor Nathan McMurray. “I am excited about the attention Grand Island is getting and grateful for the help and support of Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz.
