ERIE COUNTY, NY— Today, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz issued the following statement on the adoption of the 2016 Erie County budget by the Erie County Legislature:

“Today, the Erie County Legislature (“Legislature”) voted to adopt my proposed 2016 Erie County Budget (“Budget”). This action is the culmination of months of work by my administration in developing the Budget and underscores the sound fiscal principles that the Budget is built on.

The Legislature’s vote amending and adopting the 2016 Budget demonstrates that this is a solid, lean Budget – only 0.7% higher than the 2015 adopted budget. Additionally, out of a total budget of $1.67 billion, the Legislature’s amendments to my Proposed Budget only totaled $1.5 million, or 0.09% of the total Budget.

Also of note is a reduction in the County property tax levy from $4.99 to $4.96 per thousand of assessed value, demonstrating once again our desire to protect the taxpayers of Erie County.

My administration worked closely with both Legislature caucuses to develop these amendments, with the final amendments reflecting adjustments requested by both the Republican and Democratic caucuses as well as my administration to preserve County services and provide funding for community programs and resources, including cultural agencies.

This Budget and the process leading to today’s vote shows how local government can cooperate in a bi-partisan manner that is free of acrimony – while still getting things done for our residents.

While some of the adjustments will require management and close monitoring, especially in the out years of the County’s Four-Year Financial Plan, I am pleased with the Budget and thank the Legislature for working with me to develop a reasonable financial plan."
