Michael Ranney Brings Experience, Comprehensive Knowledge of Mental Health System

ERIE COUNTY, NY— Today, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz announced the appointment of Michael R. Ranney to the position of Erie County Commissioner of the Department of Mental Health. Ranney has served as Director of Intensive Adult Mental Health Services in Erie County Correctional settings since 2005 and has twenty-five years of clinical and administrative experience working with individuals with mental illness and substance abuse issues, including adults, children with emotional disturbances, and families. He has an extensive knowledge of the interface between the mental health and criminal justice systems along with a comprehensive knowledge of Erie County government, and has been instrumental in reforming and transforming mental health services in the Erie County jail setting.

“Michael is an excellent candidate for the position of Commissioner of Mental Health, with a skill set that includes extensive field experience working for Erie County and in the private sector. His familiarity with mental health law, experience working with families and children, and advocacy for those with mental illness in our community will serve well in his new role and will strengthen the Department of Mental Health,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz.  “He also understands that integrity and quality assurance in service to our residents are imperative, and will work with partners and community stakeholders to ensure that these demands are met. I look forward to working with Michael in the future as we continue to improve vital mental health services for residents that need them.”

Ranney’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Erie County Legislature. He began serving in the position on Monday, April 6, 2015.
