The fact that one in four women and one in seven men have experienced domestic violence means that many – too many – people suffer in silence.
People who are living in a domestic violence situation may be intentionally isolated from any kind of support network, such as family and friends, who could help them leave. They may also feel isolated and that no one would understand what they’re going through and that no one is able to help.
There are ways that you can help:
- Recognize signs of abuse
- Listen and provide support without judgment; keep their safety as the top priority
- Direct them to domestic violence services, medical care, shelters, legal services
