Mother Sentenced for Stabbing Her Child

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 34-year-old Zakiyyah M. Wolfford of Buffalo has been sentenced by State Supreme Court Justice Christopher J. Burns to 5 years of probation. The defendant was sentenced on Monday, July 6, 2020.

On October 9, 2019, at approximately 8:00 a.m., the defendant stabbed her 6-year old child in their apartment on Purdy Street in the City of Buffalo. Police responded to the home after being called by a neighbor. Officers found the defendant on the porch with self-inflicted stab wounds.

The child was taken to Oishei Children’s Hospital to be treated for injuries to his chest, abdomen, and arms. Wolfford was taken to ECMC.

Wolfford pleaded guilty to one count of Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, a Class “E” felony, on February 14, 2020.

In addition to her sentence, Judge Burns issued an 8 year order of protection on behalf of the victim.

DA Flynn commends the Buffalo Police Department for their work in the investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Rebecca L. Schnirel of the DA’s Special Victims Bureau.
