Today, Erie County District Attorney John Flynn joined Erie County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein and Opiate Epidemic Task Force Director Cheryll Moore to warn residents about a deadly mixture of cocaine and fentanyl that has been linked to recent overdose deaths in Erie County.
As of May 26, there have been 42 confirmed opioid-related overdose deaths this year. While toxicology reports can take several weeks, 12 of the reported overdose deaths since mid-May are suspected to involve the use of cocaine mixed with fentanyl.
In an effort to reduce risk of fatal overdose, fentanyl test strips and Narcan are available to the public. The Erie County Department of Health has started a new program to provide Narcan and harm reduction materials to bars, restaurants and other businesses in Erie County.
