Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Flaherty, Jr. announces 23-year-old Mohamed Kaba of Yonkers has been sentenced by State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller to six years in prison and three years post-release supervision in the box cutter attack of a Buffalo State student.

In June, a jury took 12 minutes to find Kaba, a former Buffalo State student, guilty of Assault in the Second Degree.

On September 7, 2015,  Kaba started a fistfight with 23-year-old Tyrell Ganey from  St. Albans, NY outside the STAC (Student Apartment Complex) building on the Buffalo State campus and pulled out a box cutter slashing Ganey at least five times.

The defendant was expelled from the college. The victim, who has since graduated, was left with numerous scars on his body.

“College campuses should be a safe environment for learning,” says acting DA Flaherty.  “There is no legitimate excuse for walking around the college campus while armed with a weapon. Our office is committed to protecting students from violence of any form.”

Acting DA Flaherty commends the SUNY Buffalo Police Department for its assistance in the case, including Investigators Thomas Einhiple and Renee Polniak.

Assistant District Attorneys Justin T. Wallens and Stephen Earnhart prosecuted the case.
