Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 25-year-old Daniel Dumesh of Ontario, Canada (Holland Landing, ON) has pleaded guilty before State Supreme Court Justice Christopher J. Burns to Attempted Grand Larceny in the Third Degree.
An 81-year-old Iowa woman was convinced to mail more than $8,000 in cash to a UPS store in Cheektowaga. She was told it was to cover the taxes on lottery money she thought she won. An alert UPS employee spotted the suspicious package and notified the Cheektowaga Police Department that apprehended Dumesh when he arrived to pick up the money.
Dumesh faces up to 4 years in prison when he is sentenced by Justice Burns on April 26, 2017 at 9:30 a.m.
DA Flynn credits the Cheektowaga Police Department, including Detective Joseph Crean, as well as the quick-thinking workers at the UPS store.
Special Investigations and Prosecutions Bureau Chief Candace K. Vogel is prosecuting the case.
