Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 44-year-old Scott Schaefer of Getzville has been sentenced by State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalski to 1-3 years in prison for sending inappropriate texts to a minor. 

In August, Schaefer pleaded guilty to Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors in the Second Degree. 

The former science teacher at St. Gregory the Great School in Williamsville admitted sending several sexually explicit texts to a 12-year-old between June 9-11, 2017.  Schaefer was immediately terminated by the school. 

“If the mother hadn’t caught on and discovered the texts, this could have escalated into something greater,” says DA Flynn. “Parents need to be aware who is texting their children.” 

Justice Michalski also issued an order of protection prohibiting any contact with the victim until November 17, 2028. 

DA Flynn commends the thorough investigation by the Amherst Police Department Special Victims Unit overseen by Lt. August Canna, as well as the expedient and diligent police work of Detectives James Doane, Mark Pitirri, Ronald Smith and Edward Solek, who brought the defendant to justice the day after the complaint was filed. 

Chief Rosanne E. Johnson of the DA’s Special Victims Bureau prosecuted the case.
