UPDATE: A jury found Casado not guilty following a trial in October 2021.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that a bail revocation hearing was conducted today in the case of the People v. Shane Casado.

It is alleged that during the late evening on November 27, 2018, the defendant fatally shot his former girlfriend 22 year-old Rachael Wierzbicki outside a home on Edson Street in the City of Buffalo.

Casado was arrested and subsequently arraigned before Buffalo City Court Judge Betty Calvo-Torres on November 28, 2018, and was remanded without bail.

The defendant was indicted on Murder in the Second Degree and was arraigned on the indictment on February 1, 2019 before Judge John L. Michalski.  He was again remanded without bail at that time.  At arraignment, the defense attorney reserved his right to make a bail application in the future. A bail hearing was conducted on March 6, 2019 and the defendant’s bail was modified to $175,000 cash or bond and the defendant posted bond later that day, over the objection of the District Attorney’s Office.

The People made a motion to have the judge reconsider his decision.  That motion was heard today.  The District Attorney’s Office presented the Court with new information and asked the judge to revoke the defendant’s bail.

The judge agreed with the District Attorney’s Office that good cause had been demonstrated to revoke the defendant’s bail and the defendant was taken back into custody.

This case is now scheduled for trial on August 12, 2019.
