Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 28-year-old Montek Mastin of Buffalo has been sentenced by Erie County Court Judge Kenneth Case to 25 years to life in prison.

On July 14, 2018, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Mastin shot 28-year-old Dion Donald, multiple times with an illegal handgun as he sat in the passenger seat of a parked vehicle at a gas station on the corner of Genesee Street and Crossman Avenue in the City of Buffalo. The victim died from his injuries at ECMC.

A jury found Mastin guilty, as charged, of one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class “A-1” felony, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class “C” violent felony, on December 23, 2019.

The jury also convicted 24-year-old Jamal Young of Buffalo of one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. Young was charged as an accomplice to the crime for being the driver of the vehicle that drove away from the scene of the crime. He was found not guilty of the murder charge. Young was sentenced by Judge Case to the maximum of 15 years in prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Eugene T. Partridge of the DA’s Homicide Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Matthew S. Szalkowski of the DA’s Felony Trials Bureau.
