December Bee Article

It is hard to believe that we are quickly approaching the close of 2021. This was another year affected by the COVID pandemic, but one where we have made major strides, most notably in the form of a vaccine. As always, the month of December was a busy one for the Legislature, working to amend and eventually approve the annual budget for 2022. Once again, I feel confident that we’ve successfully allocated funding to improve District 3, as well as all of Erie County.

On Thursday, December 2, the Legislature voted to pass Erie County’s 2022 budget. As in 2021, this budget included a tax rate reduction. Thanks to COVID-related federal funding, as well as strong fiscal leadership, the county has been able to maintain stability while moving toward improving infrastructure, programs, and resources that benefit all of our residents. Aside from delivering directly for the taxpayers, the Majority Caucus was able to allocate funding to non-profit and community organizations. In District 3, I was able to provide funds to organizations that provide greatly for our residents. These include cultural entities, small business groups, and youth/senior services.

This year, we have begun to return to a sense of normalcy, and the holiday season is a great time to reflect on that. I know that last year was a difficult time, with many still practicing social distancing; the holidays were a time where we faced perhaps the greatest impact. It is great to see many of our cherished events and traditions returning this year, and I am overjoyed to see so many residents at celebrations, tree lightings, and family events while our children are safely attending school full time, in-person.

This is also the time of year where I am reminded just how many wonderful small businesses we have in District 3. From Delaware Avenue in Kenmore to the many shops on Hertel, we have a great amount of options to “shop small.” Please keep these in mind as you are completing your holiday shopping.

The last two years have certainly brought along many unprecedented challenges, but we have also seen great resilience, and I am so proud of those who have stepped up, given back, and helped others face these difficulties. I hope that 2022 will bring a boom of prosperity for all of Erie County, especially our small business owners.

I am proud of the work the Legislature has done this year, and hope that we can continue to provide these vital services of all of Erie County.
